Desert Threads— Stitching Together Community and Creativity this Fall

Blanca Sanchez, Desert Threads Quilt Chapter of AQG

The Desert Threads quilt group is celebrating a season full of creativity, connection, and community service. This fall, members have been hard at work sharing their talents through both learning opportunities and charitable projects.

One of the group’s proudest accomplishments this year is the completion of the Quilts of Valor President’s Challenge where members created and donated 17 beautiful quilts to deserving veterans. Each quilt represents hours of care, craftsmanship, and gratitude for those who have served our country. The project brought members together in a shared spirit of purpose and generosity—an inspiring reminder of how quilting can warm both hearts and homes.

But the giving doesn’t stop there. Desert Threads continues to work on a variety of community service projects, offering comfort and creativity to those in need throughout the region. Whether it’s making quilts for local organizations or crafting items for special causes, the group remains committed to using its skills to make a difference.

Learning and sharing knowledge are also key parts of the Dessert Threads mission. This month, Debbie Kattelman taught a class on Stripology© rulers, a helpful tool that makes cutting fabric faster and more accurate. Classes like these are a great way for quilters of all skill levels to expand their techniques while enjoying the camaraderie of fellow makers.

Desert Threads warmly welcomes newcomers to attend meetings, learn more about quilting, and become part of this inclusive, creative community. Whether you’re an experienced quilter or just curious about getting started, you’ll find encouragement, friendship, and plenty of inspiration.

For those looking to explore beyond the sewing room, members recently discovered a charming quilt shop in Florence, Ariz., less than an hour away—a perfect destination for a fabric-filled day trip: Main Street Fabrics, 440 N. Main Street, Florence, Ariz. It’s yet another reminder that the joy of quilting extends far beyond the stitches, connecting people and communities through shared passion.

This fall, Desert Threads invites everyone to join in the fun, fellowship, and creativity that quilting brings. Together, the group continues to piece together not just fabric, but friendships and community spirit—one quilt at a time. We meet at 9:30 a.m. on the second Wednesday of every month in the Cottonwood Computer Learning Center of Sun Lakes Country Club, 25630 S. Brentwood Drive, in Sun Lakes.
