The typical American diet contains a large proportion of unhealthy fats, too few fruits and vegetables, too much sugar and sodium and too little fiber. This contributes to the risk of heart disease, diabetes, inflammation and chronic diseases. The right foods help our bodies build and repair tissue, decrease inflammation and protect us from illnesses and diseases, in addition to being the fuel that gives us the necessary energy to go about our day.
We may know that good nutrition is essential for good health but struggle to understand the building blocks of nutrition. Improving our health through nutrition can begin with small, simple, easy changes in your food choices. Having support and encouragement is important in this journey. A good first step is to join a sharing group which will help to build a base of nutritional knowledge that will sustain you for the rest of your life. The Fit and Fun Wellness Group meets on Wednesday mornings at the Cottonwood Clubhouse, Room A-7, from 9:30-10:30 a.m.; weigh-in is from 9:15-9:30 a.m. Look for the Fit and Fun sign. There is a $5.00 one-time sign-up fee. Bring a notebook or journal and a pen.
