Local artists transform simple gourds into stunning works of art. For over 4,000 years, gourds have been more than just vessels. From ancient Egypt to modern-day America, these versatile fruits have been used for everything from water carriers to musical instruments and artistic creations. Today, a group of talented artists in Sun Lakes is continuing this rich tradition.
As crafters with the Sun Lakes Rock, Gem & Silver Club, the dynamic team of instructors, led by Karen Wollscheid, Barbara Thompson, and Sally Lewis, offers classes for all skill levels. With a combined 30 years of experience, these artists are passionate about sharing their knowledge and fostering a sense of community.
“It starts with the idea,” says Sally Lewis. “The only limit is your imagination. I knew nothing about gourds when I joined the club. Now, it’s an endless source of creativity.”
As Sally paints a series of whimsical Grinch ornaments, Karen adds color to a towering, hand-carved vase. “Our classes are intimate, with a maximum of four students,” Karen explains. “We guide you through every step, from cleaning and cutting to designing and painting. All tools and supplies are included in the affordable $25 class fee.”
Barbara Thompson, a seasoned gourd artist, is known for her imaginative creations. Her fantastical dragon, crafted from multiple gourds, copper sheets, and fabric, is a testament to her out-of-the-box approach.
These ladies, along with other gourd crafters in the club, meet weekly at the club’s shop in the Oakwood Country Club Arts & Crafts Center. They also participate in the Arizona Gourd Society’s Gourd Art Competition held during the Wuertz Farm Gourd Art Festival in Casa Grande, Ariz., where they’ve won numerous awards for their innovative and beautiful work.
If you’re looking to explore your creative side and learn a new skill, the Gourd Crafters invite you to join their vibrant community.
Gourd crafting classes are held on Friday afternoons and Wednesday and Thursday mornings for the 25-plus members of the group for work-shopping. For more information, please contact [email protected] or visit the club website at www.slrgs.com for more details.
