The 2017 Gayle King Invitational Golf Tournament took place on March 3, 4 and 5 at Oakwood and Ironwood Golf Courses. There were seven teams in each of the 10 flights for a total of 140 men playing three days with three different formats. The first day was a Scramble, second day was Best Ball and the third day was Alternate Shot.
One team from each flight with the lowest three-day total score got into the playoffs. Twenty determined golfers marched to the tee box. The playoff began at the 14th hole of Ironwood, and three teams were eliminated; at the 15th hole two teams were eliminated, at the 16th hole two teams were eliminated, at the 17th hole one team was eliminated, leaving two teams to battle for the win.
After three days of competition and a 5-hole shootout, the winners Terry Herbeck and Myron Urban credit Herbeck’s drives and Urban’s putting for keeping them in the game. Urban’s skill with the putter really showed. Standing over his putt on the 18th, Urban stated, “I knew what it was all about. I knew I had to get it close.” So that’s what he did, missing the birdie by a fraction of an inch, but the par was good enough to secure the win for the team. Talk about pulling rabbits from David Copperfield’s hat!
First Place: Terry Herbeck and Myron Urban
Second Place: Tom Jones and Tim Aldrich
Third Place: Rich Pavlak and Dennis McMullen
Thanks to Gayle King for all his time and efforts. This was more than a tournament; these were three days filled with fun and genuine camaraderie.
