I Love Walking

We all know how to walk, don’t we? Since those first teetering steps as a toddler, to the leisurely ambles we enjoy at weekends, it is the simplest, most joyful form of exercise. Yet how many of us actually walk properly without the ensuing aches and pains, especially when we stride out over longer distances in a bid to increase our fitness?

The Every Step Counts relaxed walking method focuses on the correct posture and joint alignment, so “the right muscles are used, in the right way, at the right time and sequence.” Our technique relates to four main areas of the body: the feet, hip, neck and shoulder and bottom.

For each part, we are trying to correct the wrong movement pattern. The idea is to stop a passive foot strike and make it more active by walking through the whole foot with a smooth rolling movement: imagine the foot is a piece of Velcro stuck to the floor and you are peeling it off from heel forwards.

This is a different style of walking and makes you think about every step you take. It helps strengthen your core and completely relieves the pressure on the back. It leaves you feeling fabulous and invigorated, more relaxed, and it’s definitely kinder on the joints.

Join us in the Palo Verde lounge any Monday, Wednesday or Friday between 8:00-9:00 a.m. and learn how to enjoy an effortless walk. Bring a water bottle—all abilities welcome!
