We took part in the Oakwood Country Club Open House that was held the morning of Oct. 29 in the ballroom. This event is organized by the HOA for groups, clubs, sport activities, etc., available to HOA homeowners featuring those specific groups. This gives those who recently moved into Cottonwood, Ironwood, Sun Lakes Country Club, Palo Verde, or Oakwood, or those who currently live in those communities, a chance to see what’s available and to ask questions of current group members.
We had four women members of our current ladies group cover the 9 a.m. to noon event, greeting attendees, hoping to find women who have played pool before who might be interested in learning more about our group. We are very pleased to announce that six women indicated they were interested, and several have already come on a Tuesday morning to play with us and are ready to join the group. We offer practice sessions for those who might feel more comfortable reawakening those skills not used in a while. But many just read these articles and drop by the Billiard Room, which is the last room on the opposite side of the country club from the ballroom. Bring your own cue or borrow from many sizes and weights available in the Billiard Room.
We are a fun-loving group that socializes while paying attention to the rules and etiquette of the game. We play 8-Ball, 9-Ball, and Cutthroat, depending on the remaining time in our session and the number of members playing at the table. Easy-to-understand rules for each game are provided to each member, and we elect a rules person who can be consulted when uncertainty prevails. We play every Tuesday from 9:15 to 11 a.m. Each week we draw numbers to determine table location and partners. On the first Tuesday of each month, we discuss restaurant suggestions from the entire group and then go to the restaurant with the most interest. Having a casual meal together gives us a chance to get to know each other better. We ask who has been pleased with their vendors and ask for recommendations for doctors or dentists for those in need. We sit out on the restaurant patios when the weather permits, especially enjoying having a relaxing and interesting lunch with our friends, surrounded by a picturesque setting.
In December the group has a voluntary collection for the Neighbors Who Care charity as a Christmas gift to the organization where volunteers do such a good job of helping those in need in our communities. We also dine together after play the second week of December to celebrate Christmas, including our Christmas Pool Contest awarding the winner a nice gift.
So, ladies, if you are looking for a fun activity to add to your weekly calendar, I guarantee you’ll enjoy this group of wonderful women. We need people with all levels of ability and value differences. We do require your attendance until the session ends at 11 a.m., so ladies who are involved with pickleball and other activities that would require their absence on a consistent basis before 11 a.m. unfortunately won’t be able to join us. Please call 630-728-5937 with any questions, to arrange a practice session, or to get more information.
