OLGA Golf News

Remember when you were a kid and when you returned to school in the fall, you had to write a story about what you did over the summer. Well, for us golfing adults, the subject is what did you do during overseed. For me, it was a concert at the Phoenix Symphony Hall to hear a classical concert, Mozart and Mahler. The first piece featured a coloratura soprano singing in Italian. I didn’t care for it, but a good portion of the audience gave her a standing ovation. Just goes to show what I know about opera. Nada. The second adventure was a trip to Tucson to visit the pig sanctuary. They have more than 650 potbellied pigs they have rescued from bad circumstances. Turns out, a cute little piglet isn’t so cute when they mature into a 350-plus-pound adult. Many people just turn them in or, worse, leave them in the desert to fend for themselves. Some people’s kids. Fuming.

Back to exciting golf news. The event on Sept. 30 was low net. Flight 1 winners were Leslie Smith in first place, Lynda Jones and Glo Malmberg tied for second and third, and Peggy Cooper was fourth.

In Flight 2 the winners were Karen Bustillo and Vicki Scott tied for first and second, Karen Tucker was third, and Sylvia Lyon was fourth. In Flight 3 Kathy Burns and Julie Hasting tied for first and second, and Janey Garibay and Susie LaSalvia tied for third and fourth.

OLGA’s event on Oct. 7 was Mutt and Jeff (the net scores on the five longest and four shortest holes). The lucky winners were as follows: Flight 1 winners were Christa Pensworth, Leslie Smith, and Lynda Jones, in that order. Flight 2 winners were Dang Teater, Cheri Curtain, and Sylvia Lyon. Flight 3 winners were Judi Walker, Shirley Weaver, and a three-way tie for third with Kathy Burns, Nancy Cohn, and Robin Thomas.

The OLGA Cup will be on Dec. 2 and 9. An awards luncheon will follow the second day of the event. Hopefully, I’ll get some good pictures for the Splash.
