The Sun Lakes Rock, Gem & Silver Club recently enjoyed a fruitful day trip to Quartzite, Ariz., where members unearthed a treasure trove of geological delights. The outing proved a successful venture for the group, which included Diana Ellis, Elaine Hatzenbuhler (the club’s resident geologist), Rena Othick, Shanna Nyberg, Clarice Vickers, Thelma Edwards, Sarah Marks, and Nikki Staggs (photographer).

The group explored several popular vendor locations, including Desert Gardens, Tyson Wells, Gem World, and Nature’s Garden, carefully examining the vast array of offerings from global vendors. Uncut banded agates, labradorite cabochons, fossils, and finished stone bowls were among the many treasures discovered.

A diverse selection of gemstones and minerals captured the attention of the club members. Turquoise from local and Southeast Asian mines, along with amethyst, onyx, malachite, and quartz in a spectrum of colors, proved particularly popular. This year’s show also boasted an impressive collection of finished silver jewelry from Italy and Mexico, alongside hand-wrapped amulets and a wide variety of glass, stone, and metal beads.

This adventurous group is already planning their next expedition: a rockhounding trip to Sycamore Creek, north of Phoenix.
