Sew-N-Sews Cool News

Gail Moore

Sun Lakes Sew-N-Sews is going strong this summer. If you pass the Sewing Room in the Oakwood craft building, you will hear words of encouragement, the hum of sewing machines, and laughter.

Our board members have been busy rounding up great workshops and classes for your summer pleasure. Sessions were organized in the spring, with intentions to encourage members to brave the hot car and gather in the cool Sewing Room. These opportunities to share and learn about projects and techniques continue throughout the summer. The fun, ideas, and learning never end.

Groups are gathering on days that Sew-N-Sews has the Sewing Room. Several of the PHD (Projects Half Done) members have met to complete projects. Others have plans to make Christmas ornaments, Christmas napkins, binding quilt skills, finger knitting, and custom fitting a pattern to yourself. A group was meeting to explore new techniques in quilting using scrap fabric. Another group is even working on steering wheel covers to protect their hands when they get in the scorching-hot car.

Children’s Charities has continued to create, organize, and deliver items to Amanda Hope. Their completed donations include 40 race tracks, 12 coloring totes, and 17 dolls, each with five outfits, a blanket, panties, and shoes. Many members contributed items, sewing time, and assistance with wrapping and delivery. Sun Lakes Rotary Club members helped with the donations, providing time and financial support.

The Garment Gustos had a field trip to SAS Fabrics in Tempe. They are working on techniques to custom fit patterns to yourself. There is a plan to have someone join them to become even more efficient in their endeavors to create clothing that fits well.

Other special interest groups (SIG), embroidery, Sew What? Pads 4 Paws, and Cricut Cutting, will continue to meet throughout the summer.

Sew whatever you have, and keep that sewing machine humming and creating throughout the summer to keep your cool in these crazy-hot days of summer. Hope to see many of our friends relaxing and having fun at the Oakwood Sewing Room in the southeast corner of the craft building.

Sew-N-Sews looks forward to returning to our regularly scheduled meetings in September. We hope to see you join us in the Navajo Room of the Phase 1 clubhouse on the second Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m.
