Sew-N-Sews Update

Eileen Turner

Sew-N-Sews is back in action. At the January and February meetings there were several new members, along with a great attendance of members. The meeting began with business items, followed by the discussion about future elections, reports, and door prizes.

At each meeting members are invited to “Show and Tell” about some of their personal projects. At this meeting, some of the women showed the panels made from packages of cotton strips, color coordinated and sold as “Jelly Rolls.” They explained what they might change next time. Lynn Kopp shared her raglan sleeve shirt made from fabric she found on the stash table (a monthly favorite where unwanted sewing or craft items are placed to find new use). Rita Grant showed a Zip and Go bag and a golf purse, which many expressed interest in making as a class. Mary Louise shared her chenille jacket and matching purse (a class is scheduled for February). Andrea Pike showed her pieced collages, and many expressed interest in a class.

Tables were set up before the meeting displaying beautifully crafted items that members are invited to sign up for classes. Some of the upcoming classes offered to members include a Hawaiian shirt quilt, a puffy quilt, a Cricut class, jewelry making, as well as the chenille jacket.

On Friday, Jan. 14, we held a new member orientation so new members could learn all the advantages and opportunities offered through the organization. Our program this month was presented by members Cathy Climp and Sandy Bealmear. We were encouraged to try new ways of changing our outfits to have many different looks using scarves. Some of their ideas included tying a scarf to make a shrug-style cover up. We learned ways to tie scarves to give different looks, and ideas were shared to accessorize and hold a scarf in place using magnets or pins. A handout was also available to all members and guests at the meeting.

Sew-N-Sews has several Special Interest Groups and a social group that meet each month in the Oakwood Sewing Room. Whatever your interest in fiber arts, we have a group to support you or will set up a new group.

Sew-N—Sews’ next general meeting will be held on March 9 at 1 p.m. in the Navajo Room at Sun Lakes Country Club. Anyone wanting to come early at 11:30 a.m. to have lunch in the Sunset Grill before the meeting is welcome to join us then. Come as a guest. We welcome new members—the new member fee is $25, which includes the first-year membership and a Sew-N-Sews name badge. We hope to see you there on Wednesday, March 9.
