Striking a High Note: Chordaires Welcome New Director Cary Burns

Cary Burns

Loraine Taneja

While our public performances may be on pause for the warmer months, the Chordaires Show Chorus is working diligently behind the scenes to prepare for our most exciting season yet, starting with the announcement of our new director, Cary Burns.

Cary joins the Chordaires with an extraordinary musical background, having been a dedicated “barbershopper” for 37 years. A sought-after coach, arranger, presenter, and clinician, Cary’s expertise is recognized across the musical community. Deeply committed to the craft, Cary became a Musicality judge after promising his mentor, the legendary Lou Perry, to continue the legacy of giving back to the Barbershop Harmony Society.

Cary’s leadership is already well-known across the Valley. He currently directs three additional ensembles: the 187-member Tempe Community Chorus, the Desert Aires senior men’s barbershop chorus, and the women’s contemporary a cappella group, Wicked Pitch of the West. Beyond his technical skill, Cary is celebrated for fostering a sense of belonging and inclusivity. Inspired by the “Everyone in Harmony” movement, Cary even returned to school to graduate Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Sociology, a testament to his unwavering positivity and his belief that music is, above all, about people.

As we look forward to this new chapter, we want to look back with heartfelt gratitude. The Chordaires have always been a resilient group, and that strength was supported immensely by our previous directors, Barb and Kirk Hyder. The Hyders stepped onto the podium during a particularly difficult and transitional time for the chorus. Their dedication, steady leadership, and love for barbershop music kept spirits high and our voices united when we needed it most. We are incredibly grateful for their service and for the solid foundation they helped maintain. Because of their hard work, Cary inherits a chorus that is energized and ready to soar.

The Chordaires do not meet during the summer months, but we are already counting down the days until our voices reunite for a high-energy season of harmony. Our first rehearsal with Cary Burns will take place on September 24. Whether you are a long-time fan or a singer looking for a place to share your voice, we invite you to be part of this upbeat new era. For more information check us out at chordaires.org.
