Sun Lakes Arts and Crafts Association: Member Spotlight

Judy Sadkin

Vicki Matunas, who joined the club three years ago, is from Michigan and now expertly handles the advertising and flyers you see around the neighborhoods. She started painting rocks after she saw one in an internet garden post. It was a “simple rock” start to an “I can do that!” moment and she began collecting rocks of all sizes and painted that design on those rocks. She started looking for other designs and adding her own twist to them.

Her first projects went on a road trip to Michigan with her and were well received by one of her young grandsons who loved them so much that his mother sent a message to “Send more”. Bluey, Bingo, Elmo and Cookie Monster along with farm animals made the next trip.

She loves having something to do that brings joy to her life but more so to others that have purchased her rocks. It’s a good feeling that the happiness she experiences painting rocks can be shared with others. She enjoys her time as a member of the SLACA and all those rock lovers that are returning customers.

Her rocks feature animals, flowers, native American designs, feathers, and cartoon characters.

“The best part of my craft is seeing a design or a photo and wondering if I am up for the challenge. “In most cases, she is! “It’s such a good feeling to know that I have a talent that is also a gift that I can share with others.”

Vicki shared these words of wisdom with us: Even if you think you aren’t capable of doing something, give it a try! Sometimes hidden talents come to fruition at a later age! You are never too old to try something new!” Oh! Did we mention she is starting to add crochet items to her projects? Check them out at our next craft show!

Kay Krueger is a 23-year member of SLACA. Kay has called many locations home over the years including Wisconsin, New York, Connecticut and Washington.

Her craft projects include knitted hats, hangers, head bands, purses and the knit list goes on! She was taught how to knit by a college roommate and her mother-in-law.

She enjoys knitting while watching football and enjoying the relaxation of creating something new. And one of the best parts of crafting is donating to others in need of them. She has donated many finished projects to various organizations including hats and scarves to Hope for Kids, those tiny caps for Neo Natal Hospital units, and sharing items to the Indian Reservation.

“Find a craft to enjoy, join a group and make new friends” are some of her many words of wisdom to a new crafter. We take those words to heart!

Vicki, Kay and other members of the SLACA will be showcasing their items during our famous and fabulous Holiday Show on Nov. 28 in the Oakwood Ballroom and during the Spring Show in February.
