On January 19, Ron Parker will present an entertaining and educational talk about Agaves at the monthly meeting of Sun Lakes Garden Club. Ron fell in love with agaves after he moved to Fountain Hills with awe-inspiring views of Four Peaks and the McDowell Mountains. During that first year, he dreamed big and decided to transform both his back and front yard, using xeriscape principles. Agaves were the focus of the landscape and quickly became his passion. We can all identify with him, visiting nurseries and botanic gardens, reading articles and books. But that’s where any likeliness ceases. Ron’s one-time hobby has turned into a near full-time vocational exercise. He has been accompanied in habitat by world renowned botanists and archeologists who have provided considerable assistance toward his ever-expanding knowledge base.
On January 23, our club has planned a field trip to Arizona State University. Starting at 10:00 a.m., we will walk through the campus to see a variety of magnificent trees, guided by members of Arizona State University, Arizona State Forestry and the city of Tempe. During the past three years, the three groups have held their annual Tour des Trees on the Tempe campus. Our club members and their guests are welcome to attend a mini version of this well-known event.
