What is twofactor authentication and why do I need/want it?

Using two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an important extra layer of protection to your online accounts, like banking, financial services, doctor portals, or even some email services now. As we get older, keeping our personal and sensitive information safe becomes even more important. 2FA means that in addition to your password, you will use a second step to confirm your identity, usually a code sent to your phone or email. This makes it much harder for someone else to access your accounts, even if they know your password. Since these accounts often contain private and valuable information, 2FA helps prevent identity theft, fraud, and unauthorized access. It gives you peace of mind knowing that your important information is better protected. Although it might feel like an extra step at first, most people find it quick and easy once they get used to it. Taking this small action now helps keep your information safe and your life more secure online.

Many of our service calls are received when someone gets locked out of their email account. Account lockouts can occur for a few reasons, such as entering the wrong password too many times while trying to login, or an imposter or hacker has entered the password wrong too many times while trying to hack/break into your account. When the account gets locked by the provider it is for your protection, even though when it happens to us it feels like a major inconvenience. Resetting your password is simple IF your account information is up-to-date. If it is not up-to-date you will not be able to receive the codes you will need to prove your identity to allow you to reset your password, in effect leading to you permanently unable to ever access the email account again.

Here are few very important things to remember when using 2-Factor:

* Your email is more than messages

It’s used to reset passwords and verify your identity for many online accounts.

* Outdated info can lock you out

If your recovery phone number or alternate email is old, you may not get codes to access your account.

* Recovery info helps you get back in.

Updating your phone number and backup email makes it easier to prove you own your account if you forget your password.

* Protects against hackers.

Current info lets your email provider alert you if someone tries to access your account without permission.

* Helps avoid identity theft and fraud

Quick alerts and easy recovery keep your personal and financial information safer.

* Keep your password strong and change it regularly

A strong password is your first defense against fraudsters.

* How to update your info

Go to your email’s settings or account section. We also help you check this during a PC Tune-up service call.
