The Remodeling Corner

Janet Cook

There are two major home construction and remodeling industry shows where vendors showcase their offerings for professionals to see and experience. A panel of judges considers many entries of new and innovative products at both the International Builders Show (IBS) and the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) to determine the best in show winners. These are our favorites from both the 2020 shows.

* Best in Show, Best Home Technology Product, Best Energy Efficient Product at IBS

Micro-CHP by Enginuity Power Systems, a natural gas-powered water heater that also generates electricity and heat for the home (currently in production). The judges commented that this product won three awards because it is the biggest game changer. Eligible for alternative power rebates, the company says it will be priced the same as a backup generator and should be able to supply a home’s electrical and heating needs.

* Best Indoor Product at IBS

Skycove by Marvin, a window seating box that provides more connection with the outdoors while one enjoys the comfort of being indoors. Engineered to provide a bench without additional support that extends livable space, it offers more panoramic views than a traditional bay window.

* Best of Smart Home Technology at KBIS

U Smart Faucet by Moen can be operated with touch, wave, or voice commands (via Alexa and Google Assistant) to dispense precise water measurements and temperature from its modern, sleek design.

* Best in Kitchen Silver at KBIS

G 7000 Dishwasher by Miele Inc., a smart dishwasher with an automatic detergent dosing from a disc cartridge made by Miele. One no longer has to add soap before running each load, and it can be started via an app on your digital devices. It has flexible basket bins for more efficient loading.

* Best in Bath Gold at KBIS

UltraFresh Front Load Washer by GE Appliances engineered to stay fresh and clean with better drainage, airflow, and microban gasket, dispenser, and pump to prevent mold and mildew. It holds up to 50 ounces of detergent that will dispense according to the size of the load and material. It can be linked to the dryer so it will set the dryer time needed. If the load is under two pounds, the washer can fan air dry the clothes without applying heat making it one step wash and dry.

Happy home remodeling!
