Unity: The Five Principles, Three Ways

Kay Davis

Unity Church of Sun Lakes is a New Thought spiritual community. We practice positive thinking, affirmative prayer, and a healthy lifestyle. We follow Unity’s Basic Five Principles and use them in our daily life. Rev. Jeanne MacLaughlin is our minister and prepares weekly lessons for us on YouTube. Our website is www.unityofsunlakes.org.

If you were to look up “Unity, Five Principles” on the Internet, you would find a plethora of everything from whole books on the subject to workshops, 3×5 cards, sermons, including a hand-drawn hand with a couple words on each finger for teaching very young children the principles. The child’s version by Trish Yancey goes like this: 1. God is, 2. I am, 3. I think, 4. I pray, 5. I live. Of course, this is an abbreviation but an easy teaching tool for the very young child. In counting all the many articles, cartoons, art, and sermons, there were over 100. Here is the teen version: 1. God is all good and active in everything and everywhere. 2. I am naturally good, because God’s Divinity is in me and in everyone. 3. I create my experiences by what I choose to think and what I feel and believe. 4. Through affirmative prayer and meditation, I connect with God and bring out the good in my life. 5. I do and give my best by living the Truth I know. I make a difference. The adult version is only slightly different: 1. There is only one Presence and one Power active as the Universe and as my life. 2. Our essence is of God; therefore, we are inherently good. This God essence was fully expressed in Jesus the Christ. 3. We are co-creators with God, creating reality through thoughts held in mind. 4. Through prayer and meditation, we align our heart-mind with God. 5. Through thoughts, words, and actions, we live the Truth we know.

As we practice these principles in our everyday living, we find peace, love, and One-ness with God and all of humanity.
