As we approach our 250th anniversary as a unified nation, please take into consideration the following alarming statistic. More pets go missing on the Fourth of July than any other day of the year.
Fireworks and bursts of bright flashing lights can frighten pets and trigger them to flee or escape the yard. This can be disastrous on busy streets especially in the extreme summer heat. As responsible pet owners, it’s our job to keep our furry friends safe and secure. Keep them indoors with curtains closed to block bright flashes, and play white noise or music to mask the boom of fireworks. Never take pets to crowded firework displays.
Critical Safety Reminders:
* Ensure your pet’s collar has up-to-date contact information and that their microchip registry is current to easily reunite if they flee.
* Set up an escape-proof room, crate, or quiet interior bathroom where they feel safe.
* Secure your backyard, check your fencing and gates for gaps or weak latches. Do not leave pets unattended in the backyard as the sound of fireworks can send them over the fence or digging to get out.
* Talk to your veterinarian: If your pet has severe noise anxiety, talk to your veterinarian about anti-anxiety medications well in advance.
* Assure your backyard cookouts and picnics are safe for your pet. Alert your guests to the real concern for your pets safety. Keep alcohol, chocolate, onions, and kabob skewers well out of reach of your pet(s), as many typical barbecue items can be highly toxic.
