Who Are You Still Becoming?

Rev. Jennifer Lambert, Sun Lakes United Methodist Church

We spend much of our early lives asking what we will become. What will I do? Whom will I love? Where will I live? What will I accomplish? But perhaps there is another question worth asking, especially as we grow older: Who am I still becoming?

Christian faith makes the remarkable claim that God is never finished with us. In one of Paul’s letters (2 Corinthians), he writes, “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day” (NIV). Aging doesn’t have to be endless self-improvement, but it can be a stage of continuing with the formation of love, compassion, wisdom, patience, generosity, and grace.

Whatever your age, whatever this season holds, you are not simply who you have been. By the grace of God, you are still becoming.
