Members Zen Winter and Margaret Simkins were front and center seven and half years ago when I wrote an article about how they were involved in a friendly weight-loss competition. The goal, or at least what seemed to be the goal, was an envelope containing a modest bundle of dollar bills provided by Goalies. Both Zen and Margaret had lost weight every week for over two months. We knew it couldn’t last forever.
Eventually, a single winner would emerge. The winner would be the one who continued to lose while the other one would not lose so would cede to the winner, who would get the contents of the envelope. But the reality is that both would be winners. One of them would have the money, but both would be several pounds lighter.
Seven and a half years later, both Zen and Margaret are still Goalies and, any way you look at it, both are still winners, and we’re confident they are healthier for it. We’re still proud of them.
We’re also proud of Dana Savery who just became a Keeper. She did it by reaching her weight-loss goal in early June and keeping those unwanted pounds off for the next four weeks. That’s how it works. We Goalies set our own goals, we lose very gradually, we achieve Keeper status and we help each other maintain a healthy weight. In addition, most of us set additional goals and keep on losing.
Whether our members reach their goal or not, in Golden Goalies they (and you) will meet some very supportive new friends, will increase health awareness and will share in some laughs. Think about joining us.
Come join us for good company, support, laughs and shared wisdom. Weigh-in is Saturday from 7:00 to 7:40 a.m. in Room A-8, near the Cottonwood Library. The meeting starts after weigh-in. Contact Rita at 480-223-8340 for more information.
