Ergonomics: You, Your Computer, Tablet, and Smartphone

Helen Seaton, Publicity Director

The next virtual meeting of Computer Booters will be on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2021, beginning at 10 a.m. Note the temporary meeting time. Our speaker will be Judy Taylour.

Judy Taylour is a 30-year member of the Santa Clarita Valley Computer Club where she serves as president, editor, and webmaster. She is also co-facilitator for the Southern California Regional User Group Summit (SCRUGS,) a group of technology clubs in Southern California that have gotten together quarterly for over 20 years to share ideas and presenter information, solve problems, etc. She has been involved with the Association of Personal Computer User Groups (APCUG) since 2003, and has served as board of advisors chair for over 10 years. Judy has given numerous presentations at APCUG’s annual conferences, local technology clubs, and webinars via APCUG’s Speaker’s Bureau.

Judy will be discussing ergonomics at our February meeting. We’ve all been spending a lot more time on our computers and need to be reminded to also get up and move! Sit straight! Shoulders rounded! Arms relaxed! Feet on the floor! Wrists/hands floating! Cumulative trauma! Repetitive stress syndrome! We have all been using technology for many years; are we still practicing good ergonomics? Or are we stressing our bodies every day without realizing it by extending our wrists, slouching, sitting without foot support, and bending our head to look at poorly-placed monitors? Along the way, we started using tablets and smartphones which have a different set of ergonomic issues. This presentation will take us down memory lane on computer ergonomics, and give us ideas on the proper use of our tablets and smartphones.

We will continue to have virtual Computer Booters meetings on Zoom on the first Wednesday of the month, until we can meet face-to-face again. Our club has many things to offer members such as free technical assistance, information about new programs, how to use the programs, Microsoft classes, and access to talks and conferences on a variety of topics from APCUG. The APCUG classes are free and can be attended using your computer, tablet, or phone with the Zoom.us app. These classes are an exciting benefit for club members.
