Oakwood Niners news – February 2015

Jim Wegman, Publicity

We met our newest Niner, Al Metz, on December 11. So once again Al, welcome to the Niners. Hey guys, Ron Rudzinski, a former member, has just returned to the Niners. Glad to see you back, Ron.

2014 Niners League Championship – A much needed, but inconvenient rain storm washed out play on Thursday, December 4 and caused the postponement of the 2014 Niners Championship Round No. 1. The tournament was rescheduled to January 8 and 15, 2015. There was no league play on Thursday, December 25 and none on January 1. We hope you all enjoyed the holiday festivities with family and friends.

Rules: Rule 12-2 Identifying Ball. The responsibility for playing the correct ball is the players. Put an identifying and unique mark on your ball to help determine ownership and to avoid hitting the wrong ball. Hitting the wrong ball is a two stroke penalty. If a player is unsure if a ball in question is his and finds it necessary to lift the ball for identification, he must announce his intention to lift the ball to his opponent, marker or fellow golfers, mark the position of the ball first and give his opponent, fellow golfer or competitor an opportunity to observe the lifting and replacement. The ball can be cleaned only to the extent that it is necessary for identification. If the ball is the player’s and he fails to comply with all or any part of this procedure, or if he lifts the ball when not necessary to do so, he incurs a one stroke penalty. If the lifted ball is the player’s ball, he must replace it. Failure to do so results in the general penalty for breach of Rule 12.2, in stroke play that is two strokes. Hopefully this reminder will help golfers avoid a rules violation, penalty strokes and prevent some actions that have been observed recently.

Niners Upcoming Events: Our annual Awards Luncheon will take place on March 24 at the Oakwood Clubhouse. Show up at 11:00 a.m., meet your fellow golfers and stop at the cash bar for your favorite libation. The business portion of the meeting will include nominations for the Board of officers for the next two years. The annual Hot Dog and Suds Cookout, a/k/a The Dean Crocker Picnic, is scheduled for Thursday March 26 after our regular game.

And finally, a Happy New Year to all our members.
