Sun Lakes Model Railroad Club, the Short Line

A model at the new Arizona Railroad Historical Society in Tempe depicts the hotel at the Grand Canyon.

May was a busy month for the club. Memorial Day weekend, we set up a large model railroad display at Cottonwood along with another Model railroad club. This has become an annual event and one that draws appreciative visitors to watch the trains run.

Then later in the month we had a really fun outing to Tempe to visit the new home of the Arizona Railroad Historical Society (not to be confused with the Arizona Railroad Museum in Chandler). They previously had a layout at the State Capitol and lost that space due to state needs. It has moved to Tempe and they are building a spectacular HO layout in a new club owned space in Tempe. It is not fully open at this time as it is mostly under construction, but it will be large and spectacular. The Santa Fe Railroad was hugely instrumental in popularizing the Canyon and this hotel so it is very appropriate here.

The Club welcomes new members of all scales and railroad interests. We meet in Oakwood monthly for a business meeting and every Friday for lunch. The lunch location varies so call for the current location. Feel free to call Steve Engelhardt at 602-320-9315 for meeting times or any information related to model railroading.
