The Weeders’ Garden Club just met and enjoyed a bounty of festive snacks & treats while we learned how to grow a successful “Raised Garden Bed” by Pam Perry. She has earned lifetime status as a Master Gardner and is the director of the Demonstration Gardens for Maricopa County. Pam was extremely knowledgeable in the unique conditions for desert gardening and shared some creative ideas for building a raised bed. A few of her great tips: plant veggies you like to eat and that may be expensive at the store, rotate the ground use so the soil can rest/restore minerals and keep to a 45-60 day maturation period so you can enjoy the “fruits of your labor” within our short seasons.
There was a lot of enthusiasm for two upcoming field trips: Wallace Gardens – this beautiful 11 acre property in Scottsdale has been a favorite for the abundance of cacti and succulents. However, this is a last chance event! As of April all the plants will be moved to another location. Also, The Plantstand, a gardener’s shopping paradise with a huge assortment of pots, plants and accessories in Phoenix.
To honor Breast Cancer Awareness month a beautiful hanging pink Petunia was raffled off. An enjoyable and informative time was had by all!
Come join us. Weeders’ Garden Club meetings are held the second Thursday each month at 9:30 a.m. in the Sun Lakes Country Club Navajo Room. For more information contact Pat Bunkley 480-883-1556.
