Gentle yoga class begins at Sun Lakes Country Club

Effective November 4, yoga will be offered in the Mirror Room on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:00-9:00 a.m. The class will be instructed by Ann Hanson and Lois Peterson.

The class is geared towards the senior population and students are encouraged to work at their own pace and not to repeat moves that cause pain. For this reason, it is suitable for those with no yoga experience as well as those who have been practicing for some time.

“Doing the asanas is a way of bringing an oil can to all of the joints,” Hanson said. “There is no better way to increase range of motion in the neck, shoulders, hips and knees.” Some class participants have reported an improved ability to move through the activities of daily living and allowing them to remain independent longer.

Hanson started teaching in her home state of North Dakota in the mid-‘80s and after moving to Arizona in the early ‘90s, earned her teaching certification through Desert Song Yoga Center in Phoenix. Her method of teaching allows students time to move in and out of poses carefully and to use their breath as a tool to calm the mind and release tension stored in the body.

The class is open to residents and their guests in all parts of Sun Lakes. The fee is $4 per session. Wear loose comfortable clothing and bring a mat.
