Restorative yoga is a gentle, slow-paced practice focused on relaxation and rejuvenation. It uses props such as bolsters, blankets, and blocks to support the body in restful poses that target the connective tissue. It cultivates awareness of the body and breath, fostering mindfulness and a deeper connection to the present moment.
To get the most out of your Restorative Yoga class, focus on creating a comfortable environment, utilizing props effectively, and letting go of expectations. Prioritize deep, mindful breathing and stay present throughout the practice while also listening to your body and adjusting poses as needed.
Helpful Tips:
1. Focus on sensation rather than how the pose looks. Ask, “How do I feel? What am I experiencing in my body right now?”
2. Find your “edge” where you feel a stretch but no sharp pain.
3. Stay still. After settling, try to move as little as possible to allow deep tissue release.
4. Use props. Generously support your body where it needs with blankets, blocks, bolsters, and straps.
Main Goals of Restorative Yoga:
1. Release physical tension
2. Calm the nervous system
3. Reduce stress and anxiety
4. Improve sleep, healing, and emotional balance
It’s an ideal practice for anyone dealing with stress, burnout, fatigue, injury, or simply looking to unwind deeply. The class is done on the floor and is suitable for all fitness levels and can be a powerful addition to your self-care routine. Feel free to bring anything from home that might serve as a prop for this class (blanket, cushion, towel, eye cover, etc.).
Please join Elise for class at the Sun Lakes Cottonwood Palo Verde Fitness Center. Classes are Monday and Friday at 10 a.m. The cost is $5 per class, or prepay $20 to get five classes.
Hope to see you there!
